Ruby Musselman Obituary

Ruby was born January 29, 1942 on Potts Creek in Covington, VA. With loved ones by her side, she passed away on November 22, 2023.  She is survived by her daughter, Delores “Dee” Glasl and son in law, Scott (Apex, NC);  her granddaughter, Sarah Ruth Glasl (Winston Salem, NC); Ruby’s life partner, Mike White (Raleigh, NC); brother in law, David Hamilton (Cary, NC); her aunt, Regina Bowles (Norfolk, VA); her travel companions and cousins, Brenda Smith (Kentucky) and Sue Williams (Kentucky); nieces and nephew, Ruth Ann and Abigail Freeman (Cary, NC), Jennifer Simmons (Norfolk, VA) and Donnie Wayne Simmons (Norfolk, VA); Musselman Family, many special nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, her Bugg Elementary Family, her Washington Elementary Family and her Grand-dog, Zekie, who she adored.  Ruby was preceded in death by her father, Walter Simmons; mother, Sarah “Annie” Tucker Simmons; sisters, Geraldine Hamilton and Patty Watts; her twin brother, Wayne Simmons;  brothers, Elmer and Ted Simmons; her grandparents, BH and Ida Tucker, and William and Emma Simmons (from Roaring Run/Potts Creek, VA); and her non biological son/cousin/friend, Michael Armstrong who encouraged her beyond measure as an educator to be an educator.

Ruby grew up on Potts Creek in Virginia.   Her family moved to Roanoke, VA in 1958.  When her daughter left Roanoke in 1980 for the Air Force, Ruby packed her things in her car and moved to Fort Worth, Texas to be near her brother, Elmer.  In Texas, she worked at the Carswell Air Force Base Officer’s Club for over 20 years.  She also worked at the Busy Bee Bakery.  At both places she was loved and adored by her colleagues and customers who would become like family, especially the Bearden family who owned Ruby’s beloved bakery.

To be near her granddaughter, Ruby moved to Raleigh, NC in 2007.  Always loving to be around people, she started volunteering at Bugg Elementary where she became a school fixture for over ten years 2008-2018.   A room at Bugg Elementary was named for Ruby and her daily dedication to the students and staff.  In 2018, she switched to volunteering at Washington Elementary.  She was loved and adored at both schools and came to be known affectionately as “Aunt Ruby”.

Ruby loved to travel.  Everywhere her daughter was stationed, Ruby would visit.   She also traveled frequently with her cousins, Brenda and Sue.  The three were known as the Potts Creek girls.  Their travels and tales were always filled with laughter, fun and adventure.

In 2016, Ruby saw a dream come true when she was reunited with her dear cousin, Rosie Gurule, after being separated for over 50 years.
